Conservative leadership debate hosted after many voters have already submitted their ballots! https://canadianriley.com/conservative-leadership-debate-hosted-after-many-voters-have-already-submitted-their-ballots/ https://canadianriley.com/conservative-leadership-debate-hosted-after-many-voters-have-already-submitted-their-ballots/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 22 Jul 2022 05:36:01 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1527 Conservative members have been receiving their voting ballots in the mail for the last few weeks. Many voters have already submitted their votes in the mail.

Problem is, another Conservative leadership debate has suddenly been planned for August. So what options are there for voters that already submitted their votes in the mail in July!?

Pierre Poilievre’s campaign responded that will not be attending, risking a $50,000 fine.

Jenni Byrne, a senior member of Poilievre’s team, released a scathing statement on Twitter explaining his decision after the party announced earlier in the day it would proceed with a debate in early August.

Conservative party rules spell out candidates must participate in official leadership debates or face an “automatic $50,000 penalty.”

“Participation is mandatory and no substitution will be permitted,” according to the rules.

Poilievre’s campaign goes on to attack fellow leadership candidate Jean Charest’s repeated calls for a third debate, saying the ex−Quebec premier couldn’t draw the same crowd sizes as Poilievre during the spring when candidates were selling memberships to supporters.

“That is why he wants another debate — to use Pierre’s popularity with members to bring out an audience he can’t get on his own.”

In response, Charest’s campaign accused Poilievre of preferring to craft messages on social media “than answer questions in real time.”

“Jean has NEVER shied away from answering tough questions,” it reads, adding it felt the format of the French−language debate held in Laval, Que., was constructive.

Leslyn Lewis, a social conservative MP from Ontario who is also in the running, said party members had a chance to see leadership candidates present their visions for the country in the two earlier debates, which remain online.

“I am not sure what value we are giving to members through a hastily schedule debate at this time,” she said in a statement.

Like Poilievre, Lewis underscored it’s an important stage of the race for candidates to meet members and says she has a jam−packed schedule of events.

“I have found that the concerns of everyday Canadians vary greatly from the high−level political questions we get asked during official debates,” she said.

Pierre Poilievre Responds to Far-Left Global Reporter Rachel Gilmore Painting Him as Supporting the Far-Right https://canadianriley.com/pierre-poilievre-responds-to-far-left-global-reporter-rachel-gilmore-painting-him-as-supporting-the-far-right/ https://canadianriley.com/pierre-poilievre-responds-to-far-left-global-reporter-rachel-gilmore-painting-him-as-supporting-the-far-right/?noamp=mobile#respond Sun, 10 Jul 2022 22:28:51 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1191 Conservative leadership candidate Pierre Poilievre is criticizing media outlet Global News that published an article that accuses him and some of his colleagues of supporting the “far-right,” saying “No wonder trust in the media is at an all-time low.”

“One of Global News’ so-called journalists decided to smear me & thousands of other Canadians because we criticized the federal government’s unscientific & discriminatory vaccine mandates,” Poilievre tweeted on July 7.

Poilievre says in the July 7 statement he can’t be held accountable for the “words and deeds” of everyone he meets as well as those he hasn’t even met.

Poilievre was responding to Global News’ July 7 article by Rachel Gilmore “How close is too close to the far-right? Why some experts are worried about Canada’s MPs.”

The article criticizes Pierre Poilievre and other Conservative MPs’ support for veteran James Topp, who walked across Canada to protest vaccine mandates, as well as Pierre’s support for the Freedom Convoy.

“Instead of just covering the news, unprofessional journalists like you try to set disingenuous traps to attack your opponents,” Poilievre said in a statement responding to the piece.

The article insinuates that because some of the supporters of Topp and the Freedom Convoy have “far-right views,” MPs who support Topp and the freedom movement could be “legitimizing extreme ideas.” The article asks Pierre to answer the following questions that was sent to his campaign:

  • Does Mr. Poilievre feel he has a responsibility to distance himself from movements that call for actions that violate Canadian law and the principles of our democracy?
  • Does he have concerns that his support of figures like Topp, and his silence when Topp’s ties to figures like Mackenzie are revealed, could be interpreted as endorsing such far-right views?
  • How does he respond to those criticizing his silence in relation to these far-right figureheads?
  • Does Mr. Poilievre condemn white supremacy and comments from Jeremy Mackenzie, including that he’d like to watch gallows go up on Parliament Hill?

Reactions:

These posts sparked a huge reaction online with several people supporting Pierre’s response, while others felt that Pierre should answer the leading questions listed in the article.

Unfortunately Rachel does not stop at the article, Rachel proceeds to smear by posting using unverified sources from far-left extremist Antifa.  Global News’ ties to far-left extremists shows that Pierre Poilievre made the correct choice to rise above their behavior, and to not entertain their questions.

Federal Conservative Party Leadership Race – Candidates Party During Calgary Stampede https://canadianriley.com/federal-conservative-party-leadership-race-candidates-party-during-calgary-stampede/ https://canadianriley.com/federal-conservative-party-leadership-race-candidates-party-during-calgary-stampede/?noamp=mobile#respond Sun, 10 Jul 2022 04:23:02 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1157 The Calgary Stampede is back this year without Covid restrictions, but much of the attention this year will be on the federal Conservative party leadership race.  All five remaining candidates are attending a local party barbecue Saturday evening.

Lori Williams, a political science professor at Calgary’s Mount Royal University said there’s some “star power” associated with the Stampede too.”Seeing someone they have viewed online or on television and they want to sort of see and connect, and that’s a great opportunity for politicians, because sometimes those connections can change hearts and minds.”

Interim leader Candice Bergen addressed the crowd at the Conservative barbecue, as well as leadership candidates Pierre Poilievre, Jean Charest, Leslyn Lewis, Scott Aitchison and Roman Baber, and Pierre Poilievre also attended.

Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been a regular visitor to the Stampede, as have the leaders of the federal Conservatives, NDP and Green Party.

Most of the attention this year will be on the federal Conservative party leadership race, with all five remaining candidates attending a local party barbecue Saturday evening as well as many provincial politicians looking to replace Alberta Premier Jason Kenney as leader of the province’s United Conservative Party.

Interim leader Candice Bergen was scheduled to address the crowd at the Conservative barbecue, as well as leadership candidates Pierre Poilievre, Jean Charest, Leslyn Lewis, Scott Aitchison and Roman Baber.

It’s an opportunity for politicians to be in more of a relaxed and different setting, looking a bit different, engaging in different activities, a bit of a friendlier, more positive vibe to things.

At a Calgary Stampede event hosted by Brett Wilson, Conservative leadership front runner Pierre Poilievre says he would ban federal ministers from attending the World Economic Forum.

While Pierre Poilievre was on stage at a Calgary Stampede he also said Canada is currently a country where you can’t get a passport, board an air plane, or even get your cell to work.
