Shots for Tots – Canada approves Moderna Covid-19 vaccine for 6 months and older https://canadianriley.com/shots-for-tots-canada-approves-moderna-covid-19-vaccine-for-6-months-and-older/ https://canadianriley.com/shots-for-tots-canada-approves-moderna-covid-19-vaccine-for-6-months-and-older/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 15 Jul 2022 05:59:44 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1364 Health Canada says it has approved the use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children as young as six months old.

In a July 14 statement, the federal health regulator announced it has authorized the use of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine for children 6 months to 5 years of age, making Moderna the first pharmaceutical company permitted to provide their vaccine to Canada’s youngest kids. The vaccine requires two doses given about four weeks apart.

“Health Canada has authorized a two-dose primary series half the dose authorized for children 6 to 11 years of age, and one-quarter of the dose authorized for people over 12 years of age,” said the statement.

The approval also means that nearly two million children in Canada could be eligible for the shots, depending on the availability of the vaccine determined by each province.

Health Canada previously said it received a submission from Pfizer-BioNTech on June 23, requesting authorization of its vaccine for children between six months and four years old. The submission is still under review.

“After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, the department has determined that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in children between 6 months and 5 years of age,” the department said.

The vaccine is approved only days after Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore announced that “We know there is a risk, a very small risk, 1 in 5,000 that may get myocarditis, for example, and you’d have to have that discussion on the risk-benefit of complications from the vaccine versus the benefit of decreased hospitalization for a young healthy person.”

A reporter who asked him why the province has allowed for a “personal decision” instead of recommending the second booster shot for everyone.  Moore replied “We are doing a risk-based approach. There’s always a risk to having any therapeutic versus a benefit,” healthy adults do not necessarily need a second booster shot for COVID-19, as the risk of hospitalization is “very, very low.”  “You want to make sure there’s a very strong benefit versus the risk. If you’re an 18-year-old healthy individual, the risk of getting hospitalized, if you have no underlying medical illness, is very very low” said Moore.

“We know there is a risk, a very small risk, 1 in 5,000 that may get myocarditis, for example, and you’d have to have that discussion on the risk-benefit of complications from the vaccine versus the benefit of decreased hospitalization for a young healthy person.”

Study Finds That Cats and Dogs Can Get Covid from Their Owners https://canadianriley.com/study-finds-that-cats-and-dogs-can-get-covid-from-their-owners/ https://canadianriley.com/study-finds-that-cats-and-dogs-can-get-covid-from-their-owners/?noamp=mobile#respond Sun, 26 Jun 2022 15:21:27 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=878 Cat and dog owners infected with COVID-19 could end up making the animals sick with the virus, according to a Canadian study according to a study co-authored by Prof. Scott Weese of the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College.

The study said that while it was already known that animals including cats, dogs, ferrets and hamsters seem to be susceptible to COVID-19, transmission may be happening more often than previously thought.

“We did not expect quite that many,” she said. “Over half of the cats that live in a household of a person who had COVID had antibodies. That’s very high.”

Animals infected with COVID-19 show symptoms similar to humans who fall sick with the virus, she said.

“They don’t have any appetite, they feel crummy, they sleep more, they might sneeze and cough,” she said.

Transmission from humans to animals can be minimized by owners keeping their distance, wearing a mask and taking other precautions, just as they would to prevent infecting a person.

Low Covid Vaccine Uptake for Young Kids Yet USA Still Set to Roll out Tot-sized Shots With Canada Close Behind https://canadianriley.com/canada-expected-to-finish-review-of-covid-19-vaccine-for-young-kids-as-u-s-authorizes-shots-for-infants-and-preschoolers/ https://canadianriley.com/canada-expected-to-finish-review-of-covid-19-vaccine-for-young-kids-as-u-s-authorizes-shots-for-infants-and-preschoolers/?noamp=mobile#respond Sun, 19 Jun 2022 04:20:05 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=684 Canada Expected to Finish Review of COVID-19 Vaccine for Young Kids as U.S Authorizes Shots for Infants and Preschoolers

Regulators should reach a decision about whether to approve Canada’s first COVID-19 vaccine for infants and preschoolers in coming weeks, as the United States prepares to roll out tot-sized shots.

The advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unanimously decided that coronavirus vaccines should be made available to children as young as 6 months, offering protection from hospitalizations, deaths and possible long-term complications that are still not clearly understood.

U.S. regulators on Friday authorized the first COVID-19 shots for infants and preschoolers, paving the way for vaccinations to begin next week.

Will parents be eager to get their youngest vaccinated? By some estimates, three-quarters of all U.S. children have already been infected, and only about 30% of children aged 5 to 11 have gotten vaccinated since Pfizer’s shots opened to them last November.

Canada has yet to authorize a vaccine for its nearly two million children under five.
