Conservative Party Sees Massive Membership Growth Ahead of Leadership Vote https://canadianriley.com/conservative-party-sees-massive-membership-growth-ahead-of-leadership-vote/ https://canadianriley.com/conservative-party-sees-massive-membership-growth-ahead-of-leadership-vote/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 01 Aug 2022 21:32:53 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1634 The Conservative Party of Canada is reporting 678,708 members ahead of the Sept. 10 party leadership vote, a 300 percent increase compared to the 169,705 figure at year-end last year.

The Conservative Party tweeted “The Conservative Party of Canada has released the final voters list to leadership campaigns, with 678,708 eligible party members who will be selecting the next party leader. This makes the Conservative Party the largest party in Canadian history by membership.

Ontario has the highest representation with 295,815 members, marking a 283 percent increase compared to last year.

But the biggest rate of increase was in Quebec, where party membership has ballooned from 7,648 by the end of 2021 to 58,437 this year, a 664 percent increase.

After Ontario, Alberta has the highest number of CPC members, with 131,860 members, a 272 percent increase compared to last year. Third spot goes to BC, with 99,963 members, an increase of 321 percent compared to last year.

Interim Conservative Party Leader Candice Bergen Tweeted “Almost 680,000 members strong at@CPC_HQ! Incredible and historic! There’s a shift happening in Canada. Canadians are fed up with the divisiveness of Trudeau. There’s a sense of hope and optimism in our great party. Congratulations to all the campaigns for what you have done!

Conservative leadership debate hosted after many voters have already submitted their ballots! https://canadianriley.com/conservative-leadership-debate-hosted-after-many-voters-have-already-submitted-their-ballots/ https://canadianriley.com/conservative-leadership-debate-hosted-after-many-voters-have-already-submitted-their-ballots/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 22 Jul 2022 05:36:01 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1527 Conservative members have been receiving their voting ballots in the mail for the last few weeks. Many voters have already submitted their votes in the mail.

Problem is, another Conservative leadership debate has suddenly been planned for August. So what options are there for voters that already submitted their votes in the mail in July!?

Pierre Poilievre’s campaign responded that will not be attending, risking a $50,000 fine.

Jenni Byrne, a senior member of Poilievre’s team, released a scathing statement on Twitter explaining his decision after the party announced earlier in the day it would proceed with a debate in early August.

Conservative party rules spell out candidates must participate in official leadership debates or face an “automatic $50,000 penalty.”

“Participation is mandatory and no substitution will be permitted,” according to the rules.

Poilievre’s campaign goes on to attack fellow leadership candidate Jean Charest’s repeated calls for a third debate, saying the ex−Quebec premier couldn’t draw the same crowd sizes as Poilievre during the spring when candidates were selling memberships to supporters.

“That is why he wants another debate — to use Pierre’s popularity with members to bring out an audience he can’t get on his own.”

In response, Charest’s campaign accused Poilievre of preferring to craft messages on social media “than answer questions in real time.”

“Jean has NEVER shied away from answering tough questions,” it reads, adding it felt the format of the French−language debate held in Laval, Que., was constructive.

Leslyn Lewis, a social conservative MP from Ontario who is also in the running, said party members had a chance to see leadership candidates present their visions for the country in the two earlier debates, which remain online.

“I am not sure what value we are giving to members through a hastily schedule debate at this time,” she said in a statement.

Like Poilievre, Lewis underscored it’s an important stage of the race for candidates to meet members and says she has a jam−packed schedule of events.

“I have found that the concerns of everyday Canadians vary greatly from the high−level political questions we get asked during official debates,” she said.

Former Patrick Brown Campaign Organizer Comes Forward as Whistleblower https://canadianriley.com/former-patrick-brown-campaign-organizer-comes-forward-as-whistleblower/ https://canadianriley.com/former-patrick-brown-campaign-organizer-comes-forward-as-whistleblower/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 09 Jul 2022 04:09:20 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1238 Former Patrick Brown Campaign Organizer Comes Forward as Whistleblower, Leadership Race Committee Says Patrick Brown ‘Knew Full Well’ Nature of Allegations

While the party hasn’t released details of the allegation, it has said it appeared to contravene financing rules under the Canada Elections Act and came from within Brown’s own campaign.

Brown himself has accused the party’s top officials of pushing him out of the race as a way to advantage his main rival, longtime Ottawa-area MP Pierre Poilievre. Poilievre’s campaign had said the allegation did not come from them.

A longtime Conservative organizer says Patrick Brown was personally involved in an arrangement that saw her paid by a third-party company for work she did on his leadership campaign. Debra Jodoin, through her lawyer, released a statement Thursday evening after the party spent the past two days dealing with the fallout from Brown’s disqualification from the race.

On Thursday, Jodoin, who describes herself as an experienced organizer who has been involved with the party and its predecessor for more than 20 years, revealed herself to be the whistleblower.

The committee organizing the Conservative Party leadership race says disqualified candidate Patrick Brown was well aware of the allegations against him, contrary to what Brown has stated in his defense.

In an email to party members on July 8, chair of the Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) Ian Brodie sought to reassure that the move to disqualify Brown earlier this week was justified.

“I would love to share all that we have. But we have legal restrictions of what we are to say when we are dealing with allegations of breaking federal law. That’s why we referred this case to Elections Canada,” Brodie wrote.

Brodie repeated that the party had “credible” and “verifiable” information about alleged wrongdoing by Brown, and that his campaign failed to properly address the allegations.

“Every opportunity” was given to the campaign to clarify the issue, he said.

“To be clear, the Brown campaign knew full well what the allegations were. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply incorrect.”
