Trudeau government considering end to COVID vaccine mandate and testing at border https://canadianriley.com/trudeau-government-considering-end-to-covid-vaccine-mandate-and-testing-at-border/ https://canadianriley.com/trudeau-government-considering-end-to-covid-vaccine-mandate-and-testing-at-border/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 17 Sep 2022 15:13:48 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1980 The federal government is considering ending the COVID-19 vaccination mandate at the border and scrapping random testing requirements.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet have yet to make a final decision, but several sources confirmed ministers will soon consider ended the use of the unpopular ArriveCAN app.

This move follows after A constitutional freedoms group filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Canada against the mandatory use of the ArriveCAN app.

The legal challenge was launched by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) on behalf of 11 Canadians who were allegedly fined or ordered to quarantine for 14 days after returning to Canada.

“The applicants involved in this legal challenge have received fines of up to $8,500 each and been forced to disclose private medical information via ArriveCAN,” the group stated in a news release.

A report prepared for the Liberal Party of Canada in June of 2022 shows that the vaccines have little benefit for those under 60 further recommending that it is time to end travel mandates.

Report:
A Deeper Dive into the Publicly Available Ontario Data on COVID-19 Vaccination

“it is evident that the Ontario data presented in this report support that COVID-19 vaccines can benefit those 60 years and older and especially, those at least 70 years of age. However, it is not so clear that they benefit those under 60 years of age. Consequently, one must question mass vaccination programs, mandates, passports and travel bans for all age groups, given the adverse events and the unknown long-term effects of the vaccines.”

Court Documents Reveal Trudeau’s Travel Ban Had No Scientific Basis https://canadianriley.com/court-documents-reveal-trudeaus-travel-ban-had-no-scientific-basis/ https://canadianriley.com/court-documents-reveal-trudeaus-travel-ban-had-no-scientific-basis/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 02 Aug 2022 22:44:34 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1662 Four lawsuits are currently challenging the mandate in federal court and are being processed simultaneously. The government wants the court to declare the challenges moot because the Liberals suspended the travel mandate (barring international arrivals) on June 20, warning it could be brought back depending on circumstances, but applicants still want the case heard by a judge.

To defend the mandates the government presented 16 witnesses and experts in court case Karl Harrison et al. v Attorney General.

Jennifer Little, director general of the COVID Recovery Team at Transport Canada, wrote the travel mandate policy and testified on June 9 and 10 that neither PHAC nor its parent department Health Canada had made a recommendation for the mandate.

A Canadian government epidemiologist in charge of reviewing COVID-19 scientific literature testified in court that there is little information available on the impacts of vaccination on in-flight transmission of the virus.

Waddell testified as a government witness on May 31 in defense of the government’s vaccine mandate in travel. “There are not many studies that look at vaccination status, most of the research that’s been done occurred prior to widespread vaccination,” said Dr. Lisa Waddell of the Emerging Sciences Group at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

Waddell and her team were responsible for reviewing and assessing the evidence regarding in-flight transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. Waddell testified she considers that to be low risk.

Waddell also said that the PHAC brief did not recommend vaccination as a requirement to travel by air.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Family on Personal Vacation in Costa Rica https://canadianriley.com/prime-minister-trudeau-and-family-on-personal-vacation-in-costa-rica/ https://canadianriley.com/prime-minister-trudeau-and-family-on-personal-vacation-in-costa-rica/?noamp=mobile#respond Tue, 02 Aug 2022 01:00:26 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1641 Amid concerns about a looming recession in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Costa Rica for a two-week vacation with his family.

The Prime Minister’s Office says the family is returning to the same place where they stayed over the Christmas holiday in 2019 and that they are paying for their own accommodations.

The prime minister must fly on a Royal Canadian Air Force plane for security reasons, even for personal travel, and the family’s flights on the last trip to and from Costa Rica cost the government about $57,000, without thousands more spent on flight crews’ stay in San Jose.

The PMO also says it consulted with the office of the federal ethics commissioner about the coming holiday.

In 2017, Trudeau was found to have violated conflict of interest rules related to a 2016 vacation he took to Aga Khan’s private island in the Bahamas.

The PMO says Trudeau will get regular briefings while he is away.

Senior RCMP officer tells Nova Scotia mass shooting inquiry he was told not to disclose call from Commissioner Brenda Lucki https://canadianriley.com/senior-rcmp-officer-tells-nova-scotia-mass-shooting-inquiry-he-was-told-not-to-disclose-call-from-commissioner-brenda-lucki/ https://canadianriley.com/senior-rcmp-officer-tells-nova-scotia-mass-shooting-inquiry-he-was-told-not-to-disclose-call-from-commissioner-brenda-lucki/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 30 Jul 2022 05:02:24 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1609 A senior RCMP officer has testified that lawyers from the federal Justice Department advised him not to disclose a call he received from Commissioner Brenda Lucki asking him to send her details of the firearms used in the mass shooting in Nova Scotia.

Leather also told the inquiry on July 28 that he believes political interference was behind Lucki’s determination to have the firearms details made public to further the federal government’s gun control legislation.

“That’s my impression,” he said, during cross-examination by lawyer Tom MacDonald, who represents the families of two victims killed in the mass shootings.

In his testimony on July 27, Chief Supt. Chris Leather told the Mass Casualty Commission (MCC) that he had received a call from Lucki on April 22, 2020—three days after the shootings that left 22 dead—asking him to send her details about the guns.

Leather’s statement about the call with Lucki, and about a series of emails that followed, didn’t come up in a July 6 interview he gave to commission lawyers.

During cross examination on July 28, Leather told Michael Scott, a lawyer who represents the majority of the victims’ families, that he hadn’t mentioned the call in the interview because he had been told by lawyers with the Justice Department to take a “reactive posture.”

“The advice I received was not to proactively disclose the conversation (with Lucki) and the emails leading up to the meeting on April 28, [2020],” Leather testified, after his request to have his solicitor-client privilege waived was granted.

“I knew from my notes and emails I had prepared and submitted that it was obviously relevant to what would become the infamous phone call of April 28, and was troubled by that and wanted their advice and was advised to take a reactive posture,” he said.

Federal privacy commissioner investigating Trudeau’s controversial ArriveCAN app https://canadianriley.com/federal-privacy-commissioner-investigating-trudeaus-controversial-arrivecan-app/ https://canadianriley.com/federal-privacy-commissioner-investigating-trudeaus-controversial-arrivecan-app/?noamp=mobile#respond Sat, 30 Jul 2022 04:00:25 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1605 Canada’s privacy commissioner has launched an investigation into the controversial ArriveCAN app amid complaints that the app is collecting travellers’ personal information.

“Our office has received and is currently investigating a complaint that raises concerns with respect to the collection of personal information through ArriveCAN and subsequent use of that information,” said the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada in an email dated July 27.

In June 2020, a group of federal Conservatives also asked the privacy commissioner to investigate ArriveCAN due to concerns they had about the potential misuse of data. The privacy commissioner responded two months later and said that he reviewed the app’s privacy conditions and that he didn’t have any concerns at the time.

“Given the ongoing investigation and consultations, we do not have further details to provide at this time,” the privacy commissioner said.

ArriveCAN was first launched as a voluntary app in April 2020 as a way of collecting personal information needed by public health officials to enforce quarantine rules.

Its continued mandatory use has come under intense scrutiny over the past few months, especially as other public health measures fell to the wayside, such as mandatory masking and vaccine requirements.

Provinces and farmers denounce Trudeau for pushing ahead on fertilizer reduction climate policy https://canadianriley.com/provinces-and-farmers-denounce-trudeau-for-pushing-ahead-on-fertilizer-reduction-climate-policy/ https://canadianriley.com/provinces-and-farmers-denounce-trudeau-for-pushing-ahead-on-fertilizer-reduction-climate-policy/?noamp=mobile#respond Mon, 25 Jul 2022 05:10:21 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1560 Only days after Trudeau was in the Okanagan, BC on a photo shoot promoting farming and agriculture, Trudeau announces that he has decided to move forward with his cap on nitrogen emissions by reducing fertilizer use, even as provincial Agriculture Ministers beg him to stop.

Discontent with left-wing policy is triggering massive protests all over the world

Agriculture ministers from several provinces say they’re concerned about the federal government’s plan to reduce fertilizer emissions in the name of climate change at a time when global food security is an issue.

A three-day meeting of federal, provincial, and territorial ministers concluded in Saskatoon on July 22 with Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario expressing disappointment over the Liberals’ intent to impose fertilizer emissions reduction targets on Canadian farmers.

“We’re really concerned with this arbitrary goal,” said Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit in a joint statement with his counterpart in Alberta, Nate Horner. “The Trudeau government has apparently moved on from their attack on the oil and gas industry and set their sights on Saskatchewan farmers.”

According to Alberta Agriculture Minister Nate Horner, “This has been the most expensive crop anyone has put in, following a very difficult year on the prairies. The world is looking for Canada to increase production and be a solution to global food shortages. The Federal government needs to display that they understand this. They owe it to our producers.”

Fertilizer prices are a major input cost for already low-margin cash crop operations. A 35 per cent hike from this tariff — when combined with farmers’ already-inflated energy and gasoline bills — puts a lot of upward pressure on commodity prices.

That’s why Koeslag’s organization — along with the Grain Farmers of Ontario, the Ontario Canola Growers, the Atlantic Grains Council, Les Producteurs de Grains du Quebec, a half-dozen other farm groups from Eastern Canada and fertilizer industry representatives — called on the federal government again this week to reconsider.

Manitoba farmers are disappointed that their premier haven’t responded to Trudeau’s actions.

The federal government is looking to impose a requirement to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizers saying it is a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. While the Trudeau government says they want a 30% reduction in emissions, not fertilizer, farm producer groups say that at this point, reducing nitrous oxide emissions can’t be done without reducing fertilizer use.

Trudeau says Canada can be a solution to the European gas supply https://canadianriley.com/trudeau-says-canada-can-be-a-solution-to-the-european-gas-supply/ https://canadianriley.com/trudeau-says-canada-can-be-a-solution-to-the-european-gas-supply/?noamp=mobile#respond Fri, 22 Jul 2022 21:34:20 +0000 https://canadianriley.com/?p=1552 Amid European countries being asked to cut their gas use in the face of ongoing uncertainty around energy supply from Russia, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s been in talks for months with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about “how Canada can be a solution.”

“There are things that we’re trying to do in the very short term, as we look at this coming winter and the challenges that Germans are going to be facing with Russia choosing to weaponize the source of gas and oil for them,” Trudeau said Thursday.

Europe has been facing an energy supply crisis as Russian President Vladimir Putin has been using countries’ reliance on Russia for oil and gas as what officials are viewing as a form of retaliation over sanctions imposed in support of Ukraine. This has resulted in considerable reductions to the flow of natural gas, leaving countries clamouring to shore up reserve supply.

Scholz has expressed interest in Canada becoming an energy alternative, and is planning to visit Canada in August “to secure key partnerships on energy security, critical minerals and clean technology,” according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office issued following the two leaders’ meeting at the G7 Summit in Germany in June.

Trudeau’s comments were made in response to a question from a reporter in Nova Scotia about the potential for LNG projects in that province to advance, given the current situation in Europe.

“I will say that we are looking at a number of different proposals around that,” Trudeau said, declining to speak to any specific potential LNG export facilities in that province or others, of which there aren’t currently any in Canada.
