Ever wonder why Trudeau suddenly revoked the Emergencies Act, when there was seemly no change from the day before? Did it never pass in the Senate, what was it? Watch this video, this may be why? Senator Marilou McPhedran says that there was a motion to revoke the Emergencies Act. Immediately after the Emergencies Act was voted in the House of Commons, the Conservatives filed with the speaker the motion to revoke the Emergencies Act where 20 Conservative MPs already signed the motion. This is what the Emergencies Act says for motion to revoke: signed by not less than ten members of the Senate or twenty members of the House of Commons, as the case may be, is filed with the Speaker thereof, that House of Parliament shall take up and consider the motion within three sitting days after it is filed.

Trudeau said when revoking the Emergencies Act “Today, after careful consideration, we’re ready to confirm that the situation is no longer an emergency. Therefore, the federal government will be ending the use of the emergencies act.”

Candice Bergen immediately following the vote to confirm the invocation of the Emergencies Act, rose to file pursuant to section 59 of the emergencies Act, a motion to revoke the Prime Minister’s emergency declaration that was proclaimed.  Candice Bergen said “The motion is signed by more than 20 members of the Conservative Party following a linear finish, and then we’ll finish the matter at the next sit in week. I say this to all Canadians that conservatives will continue to use every tool at our disposal to answer prime ministers.”

Speculation as to why the Federal Government revoked the Emergencies Act is that there was already a movement among a significant number of senators and MPs, including some liberals to come up with the requisite signatures to begin the process of of ending the declarations and that we didn’t end up having to do that. The government was well aware that we were fairly far along in creating that joint letter that was required under this the particular section, and instead there was the decision to suspend.
